A Literary Tour of England

A journey which gives a taste of the life, work, and source of inspiration of some key English literary figures, while taking in some of England’s most beautiful scenery and key historic cities.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in London

An orientation tour of London focuses on not only London’s great world class highlights but their literary associations. Visit glorious Westminster Abbey where some of England’s greatest literary figures are buried - including Poet’s Corner. Evening welcome dinner.

Day 2 - London

This morning visit sites associated with Charles Dickens including his home in London. Also see some famous literary texts housed in the superb exhibition at the British Library. An afternoon tour will take in a guided tour of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Evening performance at Charles Dickens House with refreshments.

Day 3 - London / Shaftesbury

Leave London bound for the beautiful counties of Hampshire and Dorset. Visit Chawton Cottage, home of Jane Austen. Continue to Winchester to magnificent cathedral and where Austen is buried. Also visit the Great Hall with its Round Table and associations with the Arthurian legends.

Day 4 - Shaftesbury

A full day day touring Thomas Hardy country. The county of Dorset was the setting of many of Hardy’s novels. See Hardy’s cottage and the Dorset County Museum where his study is recreated. Follow in the footsteps of some of his most famous characters.

Day 5 - Shaftesbury / Bath / Stratford-upon-Avon

Tour to Bath where Jane Austen lived and wrote for a time. A walking tour of these delightful Georgian streets traces the pages of her life here. Continue to Tudor town of Stratford-upon-Avon - visit Shakespeare’s birthplace and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage.

Day 6 - Stratford-upon-Avon / Chester

Continue to Chester this morning - one of the most medieval looking towns in England. Walking tour including the ancient red sandstone cathedral, city walls and Roman amphitheatre.

Day 7 - Chester /Lake District Tour

Lake District Tour this morning to Cumbria’s Lake District - exquisite lake and hill scenery unfolds . This region is the home and source of inspiration to many writers and luminaries - William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter, Coleridge, Ruskin, Shelley to name but a few. Visit John Ruskin’s house at Brantwood and cruise along Lake Windermere.

Day 8 - Lake District

Visit Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage and Museum, his resting place at Grasmere and visit Rydal Mount. Also visit the Hawkeshead Gallery.

Day 9 - Lake District / York

Tour through the dramatic and beautiful scenery of the Yorkshire dales - patchwork quilts of green threaded with dry stone walls. Set amidst the bleak Pennine moors visit Haworth the location of the famous Bronte Parsonage, where the Bronte sisters wrote most of their great literary works. Continue to York one of England’s finest and most beautifully preserved historic cities.

Day 10 - York / London

Leave York bound for Newstead Abbey near Mansfield. Visit the spectacular home of Lord Byron which incorporates the façade of a 12th century Augustinian priory. Continue to Eastwood to visit the home of D.H.Lawrence, now a museum. Visit the house and other sites associated with his great life. Continue to London for overnight.

Day 11 - London

Enjoy a free day in London.

Day 12 - Departure from London

Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
